Why Prepare Before Organic Chemistry?
If you're taking Organic Chemistry this semester and are wondering how to prepare or whether you're ready, you're not alone. After years of working with Organic Chemistry students, I've found that most students begin the course unsure of what to expect or whether their General Chemistry foundation is ready for Organic Chemistry.
Organic Chemistry introduces an entirely new way of thinking about chemistry. While the course builds on concepts from General Chemistry, it assumes students already have a strong foundation and are ready to apply those concepts in ways they've never practiced before.
Without a solid foundation, students often find themselves trying to learn brand new Organic Chemistry concepts while simultaneously filling in gaps from General Chemistry. In my experience, that's exactly where the transition becomes overwhelming and students begin to fall behind.
Because Organic Chemistry is cumulative, each new topic builds on the one before it. Beginning the semester with a strong foundation makes it much easier to understand and build on new concepts as they're introduced.
That's exactly why I offer the August preparation sessions.
Before classes begin, we'll strengthen the General Chemistry foundation that Organic Chemistry depends on so you can begin the semester ready to learn and understand new material rather than trying to catch up.
What Preparation Sessions Look Like
Every student starts Organic Chemistry with a different background, which is why every preparation plan is personalized.
We’ll begin with a free consultation to talk about your previous chemistry experience, your confidence with General Chemistry, and your goals so we can create a preparation plan that’s right for you.
For most students, our preparation sessions focus on building a strong foundation before the semester begins. We’ll strengthen the General Chemistry concepts that Organic Chemistry builds upon, identify areas that need reinforcement, and begin looking at those concepts through an Organic Chemistry lens. The goal is to help you begin the semester with the background needed to feel prepared, confident, and ready to build on new material from Day 1.
Students who would like additional preparation can choose to continue beyond the foundational sessions before classes begin.

Typical Foundations Preparation

Optional Additional Preparation

Available for students who would like to continue beyond foundational sessions before classes begin to gain familiarity with Organic Chemistry material

Typically 2-4 additional one-hour sessions in August

Cost: $100 per additional session
